Many of these homesteaders were attracted to the state due to its abundant land and opportunities for farming. They were also drawn by the Homestead Act of 1862\, which provided free land to anyone who was willing to settle on and improve it. The talk on Michigan Black Homesteaders will cover the experiences of two families as they established homes and farms in Michigan. \n
